Sanako UK is Proud to Support an MFL Pilot Scheme in Association with International Newcastle
Following the huge success of our Technology in Language Teaching (TiLT) event, which Newcastle University kindly hosted in July 2025, Sanako UK is excited to announce a new pilot scheme for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) in the North East.
Our pilot program aims to transform how Modern Foreign Language (MFL) lessons are delivered to GCSE and A-Level students across various schools, trusts, and regions, with the potential for national impact.
We previously ran a highly successful pilot program in Wales that significantly enhanced daily language lessons for both teachers and students. Wales led the way by publishing a year-long survey on the program's effectiveness, and we're pleased to see its continued positive impact.
As a Finnish company, Sanako's technology and pedagogical approaches are rooted in Finland's renowned educational system.
With over 60 years experience in delivering state of the art language learning and interpreting technology across the globe, and with over 7 million customers in 110 countries Sanako really understands the needs of today's language teachers and interpreters
Our online and AI enhanced Sanako Connect system is at the heart of this MFL revolution as it offers three very different areas for teaching languages, which has a track record on engaging MFL students, improving speaking & listening and most importantly enjoyment of the subject.
This new pilot is going live in September 2025 in conjunction with International Newcastle and will include most schools across North East England, we are expecting to see the same positive results as we previously saw in Wales given the teacher’s enthusiasm already shown
1 - LIVE audio and video streaming for Group Talk, Pronunciation & Reading Aloud
Sanako Connect offers a traditional language laboratory as a standard feature, enabling live teaching, monitoring, speaking exercises, pair work, and group discussions.
Beyond these traditional functionalities, Sanako Connect is an exceptionally versatile language learning tool, providing live audio and video streaming on any device, at any location, and at any time.
Being a fully GDPR compliant system, in accordance with our ISO14001 and ISO9001 EU accreditation, any student in any school can be invited to join a lesson simultaneously and they will always remain anonymous to Sanako, only the teachers will know them.
This technology has been delivering results since the 1960’s but like all technology it has evolved tremendously in that time. In the 21st Century it’s well known that the busy MFL teachers can spend more time speaking with and discreet listening to students through headsets, thus making the most of limited lesson time.
Sanako Connect takes this even further by offering a range of advanced features.
You can set up spontaneous role-play activities, conduct simultaneous oral assessments, and practice pronunciation with AI marking and instant feedback. Our AI read-aloud system also provides instant feedback, and you can even set up cover lessons in minutes.
As an online system with a unique license system, Sanako Connect allows for live role-play activities with students in different schools within your trust or even in other countries. You could easily establish a live discussion with students from partner schools within the trust or overseas. It is completely at your discretion whether or not you also also wish to use the live video streaming facility.
It's also a valuable tool for primary outreach and delivering A-Level lessons. In some countries this technology is used for MFL teachers to deliver live cover lessons remotely.
2 - Posting homework online and quickly setting cover lessons
Posting homework for students is a very simple process, essentially just a click of a tab.
You can create homework in almost any form, including pronunciation practice, reading aloud, image description activities, or gap-fill exercises.
Your may just want them to listen to an audio or video file, listen to your prerecorded voice. Perhaps watch an embedded YouTube video or visit a particular website.
All of these can be quickly created by recording your voice for a question and answer session, or you can use the ready-made exercises.
Students simply submit their work when completed and AI marks their work saving so much time. The teacher receives named and assessed student work including recordings if required.
At Sanako we understand that language teachers are incredibly dedicated and often continue working beyond typical hours.
Our secure system allows teachers to discreetly monitor students as they complete homework assignments and provide live support or guidance when needed.
It is obviously entirely the choice of the MFL teacher as to whether or not they advise the students they have been monitoring their work in a real time environment, and exactly the same applies the classroom.
3 - Using the ready-made GCSE content or quickly creating your own
Sanako UK offers a wide range of GCSE and WJEC language packs.
We also understand that there are times when you might need to create an ad-hoc exercise quickly or adapt to curriculum changes.
To address this, we've made it easy to create your own exercises. You can either use a simple drag-and-drop procedure for various elements or leverage Sanako AI to rapidly generate multiple exercise types in seconds.
These custom exercises can also be easily shared with your colleagues around the school or trust who can edit and re-share according to their needs
